The very rich diversity of flora and fauna, and wealth of indigenous knowledge systems, in the developing world combined with modern technologies can lead to the development of valuable new medicines. The biggest obstacle to product development in the developing country is the huge “R&D chasm” that exists between discovery and technology transfer. To bridge this gap the conference will hope to bring together scientific experts and potential industry partners to assess the availability of the required expertise and facilities in developing countries, to initiate multidisciplinary collaborations between research groups with complementary strengths, and to induce need-based capacity development in S&T-lagging countries. The objective would be the setting up of regional drug discovery and development research networks, that working together with local industries, could help in the establishment of a research-led pharmaceutical sector focused on the health care needs and economic growth of the developing world.
